NJHS UPDATES: ----------------------------------------------------- *2/4/2022 Update* • Remaining Meeting Dates (4:15 – 5pm in Media Center – pick-up in the back bus loop ONLY): 3/4/22, 4/8/22, and 5/6/22 • Open Officer Position: As many of you know, our NJHS Secretary (Nevena Ruseva) has left our school as of last week. We voted at the meeting and our new Secretary is Eloisa Waters! • Upcoming Service Projects: The votes are in, and beach clean-up won the popular vote for our spring service project. As discussed at our previous meeting, NJHS advisors will not be chaperoning a beach clean-up event. We will vote today on a date/time/beach location for the event, and you will be responsible for sharing this information with your parents. Your parent is responsible for you during the beach clean-up! There will not be any chaperone coverage. Your parent must take a picture of you, showing the time on a watch, when you begin and when you end working. You must also have a picture of the trash collected before being thrown out. This will be required for advisors to sign off on beach clean-up service hours. Date: 3/12/2022 Time: 1pm-4pm Location: Jax Beach- meet under the pier • End of Year Celebration: As we approach the end of the school year, we would like to have an opportunity to celebrate all your hard work and dedication in representing our NJHS chapter. We took a majority vote at the meeting today and most members voted for an end of the year field trip celebration. Details to come at the next meeting. • Community Service Hours: All NJHS members are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of community service / volunteer work during the school year. Make SURE you take pictures of your hours log frequently in case it is lost and take a picture before you turn it in to Mrs. M. Walker. All service hours must be documented and signed by an adult (relatives can’t sign for hours). Service hour logs are available outside Mrs. M. Walker’s door (room 169). All hours must be completed and submitted to Mrs. M. Walker no later than the last meeting on 5/6/22.
*1/7/2022 Update* NJHS Meeting January 7, 2022 • Remaining Meeting Dates (4:15 – 5pm in Media Center – pick-up in the back bus loop ONLY): 2/4/22, 3/4/22, 4/8/22, and 5/6/22 • Organized Service Opportunities: Students who have signed up for volunteer events organized by NJHS advisors and then not shown up are no longer allowed to sign up for such events. This gives us no time to replace you with another NJHS member, which means the event is short-staffed, and additionally takes away hours other members could be earning. Members who have done this know who they are and will be removed from any slots they attempt to sign up for in the future. These members are now responsible for finding their own community service opportunities. At this time, we do not have any organized service opportunities scheduled. • Community Service Hours: All NJHS members are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of community service / volunteer work during the school year. At this time, you should have approximately 25 hours completed to be on track for the year. • Service Ideas: It is not your advisor’s responsibility to find opportunities for you to volunteer. We organize some events, and you are responsible for finding others. Some examples include: cleaning up trash at a city/state park (park rangers can sign hours logs), reading to animals at the Humane Society, doing laundry or working the monthly pet food bank distribution at First Coast No More Homeless Pets (requires an adult present), fostering animals in your home for Jacksonville Animal Care & Protective Services, doing yard work for elderly neighbors, assisting teachers before/after school, helping out with siblings’ sports teams (coaching, equipment, concession stand, etc.), helping care for/teach younger children at your church, participate in a walk/run event to benefit a cause, help with recreation at a local senior center (crafts, music, etc.), organize or distribute at a local food bank, etc. • Upcoming Service Projects: Will be discussed today!
